Police concerned over driver behaviour - Day One Operation Stay Alert Saturday, 08 June 2013 Police are urging motorists during the long weekend to think about the road and traffic conditions and the choices they make every time they take control of a vehicle. Operation Stay Alert, the NSW Police Force road safety campaign, is underway runs until Monday 10 June 2013. Double demerit points are in force and apply for all speeding, seat belt and motorcycle helmet offences during this period. Superintendent David Evans, Commander of Operation Stay Alert, said motorists need to take care and drive to conditions with a bit of rain falling in various areas across the state. “During last year’s operation, only two people were killed on NSW roads during the long weekend. We are already at three deaths which include a 79-year-old man near Deniliquin, a 20-year-old rider at Minchinbury and an 18-year-old Canley Vale man. “Every time we take control of a vehicle we make a choice and police across the state this weekend are finding some smart people are making bad choices on our roads,” he said. “Whether that is choosing to drink and drive, travel above the speed limit or not adjusting the way you drive to suit the conditions – those choices can bring life-changing consequences,” Supt Evans said. Day One Results Across the state totals ¬¬– police have conducted 44,718 breath tests with 20 people charged with drink driving. There have been 164 reported major crashes with 57 people injured. Police charged 91 motorists for not wearing a seat belt, 1132 speeding tickets were issued (not including fixed speed cameras), and 3461 drivers were issued with other traffic infringement notices. In Central Metropolitan Region there were no fatalities, 23 reported major crashes with 10 people injured. Police charged seven motorists with drink-driving offences, 24 were charged with not wearing a seat belt, 128 speeding tickets were issued (not including fixed speed cameras), and 862 drivers were issued with other traffic infringement notices. In North West Metropolitan Region there was one fatality, 36 reported major crashes with seven people injured. Police charged three motorists with drink-driving offences, eight were charged with not wearing a seat belt, 217 speeding tickets were issued (not including fixed speed cameras), and 486 drivers were issued with other traffic infringement notices. In South West Metropolitan Region there was one fatality, 42 reported major crashes with 15 people injured. Police charged four motorists with drink-driving offences, 21 were charged with not wearing a seat belt, 83 speeding tickets were issued (not including fixed speed cameras), and 673 drivers were issued with other traffic infringement notices. In Northern Region there were no fatalities, 27 reported major crashes with 13 people injured. Police charged two motorists with drink-driving offences, 11 were charged with not wearing a seat belt, 294 speeding tickets were issued (not including fixed speed cameras), and 647 drivers were issued with other traffic infringement notices. In Southern Region there was one fatality, 21 reported major crashes with nine people injured. Police charged two motorists with drink-driving offences, three were charged with not wearing a seat belt, 202 speeding tickets were issued (not including fixed speed cameras), and 373 drivers were issued with other traffic infringement notices. In Western Region there were no fatalities, 15 reported major crashes with three people injured. Police charged two motorists with drink-driving offences, 20 were charged with not wearing a seat belt, 141 speeding tickets were issued (not including fixed speed cameras), and 296 drivers were issued with other traffic infringement notices. In addition Traffic and Highway Patrol Command police charged four motorists with not wearing a seat belt, 67 speeding tickets were issued (not including fixed speed cameras), and 124 drivers were issued with other traffic infringement notices. Examples of irresponsible driver behaviour from Day One (Friday 7 June 29013) of Operation Stay Alert: At 6.40pm, a 40-year-old man was allegedly caught by police driving at 119km/h in a 70km/h area on Erskine Park Road at Erskine Park. He was stopped and issued with an infringement notice for exceeding speed limit by more than 45km and his licence was suspended. About 11pm, a 17-year-old P-plater was allegedly detected by police travelling at 134km/h in a 70km/h area on The Northern Road, Glenmore Park. He was stopped and issued with an infringement notice for exceeding speed limit by more than 45km and a licence suspension notice issued. About 3.30pm, police have stopped a vehicle after allegedly conducting a u-turn in front of a stationary random breath testing site at Kuring-Gai. The woman driver returned a positive reading 0.220. She was issued with a field court attendance notice for high-range drink driving to attend Hornsby Local Court on 4 July 2013 and her licence was suspended. About 9.10pm, police stopped a 21-year-old man on Gould Road, Eaglevale, for a mobile random breath test. When the vehicle stopped the driver allegedly ran from police across a park. Police caught the man short distance away and the disqualified driver was placed under arrest. His drivers licence was disqualified till 2021. Just after 10pm, a 44-old- man riding a motorcycle on Elizabeth Drive at Badgerys Creek was stopped by police. Police will allege he was travelling at 164km/h in an 80km/h area. He was issued with an infringement notice for exceeding speed limit by more than 45km and a licence suspension notice issued. About 3.45pm, a 55-year-old man was caught by police allegedly travelling at 70km/hr in a 40km/h school zone. Police will also allege he was watching a DVD on a player while driving. He was issued with traffic infringement notices for both offences. At 1.45pm, a 20-year-old McKees Hill man was driving a Nissan Skyline west-bound on the Bruxner Highway at Uralba. He was allegedly detected by police travelling at 158km/h in a 100km/h area. He was issued with an infringement notice for exceeding speed limit by more than 45km and a licence suspension notice issued. In addition his number plates were seized from his vehicle. About 11pm, a Holden Commodore was seen driving erratically in Kurrajong Avenue, Leeton, before colliding with several trees in the median strip. Two male occupants were seen running from the vehicle. Police were called and attended. Two males returned to the scene. The 17-year-old Leeton male, believed to be the driver, returned a positive breath test of 0.117. He was issued a field court attendance notice for mid-range drink driving and drive whilst suspended. The owner of the car, a 16-year-old Leeton male, allegedly told police he had been driving the vehicle earlier and was issued a traffic infringement notice for learner drive unaccompanied. His licence was suspended and confiscated. About 3.20pm, a Ford Territory was stopped by police in Edward Street, Hay, for a mobile random breath test. The 34-year-old woman driver told police she was unable to produce a licence as she was disqualified till 2015. Checks confirmed this and she was issued with a field court attendance notice to appear before Hay Local Court on 5 August 2013. About 4pm a man riding a trail bike was observed by police travelling east on Finley Road, Deniliquin. He was stopped and issued with a field court attendance notice for being disqualified, unregistered, uninsured and not wear helmet. He is due to attend Deniliquin Local Court on the 18 June 2013. About 1pm, a 32-year-old man from Wollongong was stopped on Elliotts Road, Fairy Meadow, for a random mobile breath test. He was issued with a field court attendance notice for driving whilst disqualified. At 7.10am, a 22-year-old male P-plate driver was allegedly detected travelling at 137km/h in a 100km/h area on the Monaro Highway, at Billilingra. He told police he was travelling towards the NSW snow fields. About 10am, a 26-year-old from Bidwill was stopped on the Princes Highway at Batemans Bay for a stationary random breath test. Inquiries revealed the driver was disqualified until 2028. He was bail refused to appear in court on Tuesday 11 June 2013. About 7.20pm Coonabarabran HWP stopped a 41-year-old man from Queensland and located a radar detector in his 4WD. The device was confiscated and a traffic infringement notice issued. About 6.30pm, police stopped a 30-year-old woman driving with three young children on George Street, Mudgee, for a random breath test. She was charged with high-range drink driving.
