Police dogs are wonderful beings trained in the service of crime and protection, but who guards the lives of these devoted animals? Edmonton Canadian police say there needs to some way to protect the animals working with officers after one of their dogs was killed by a suspect. Quanto worked with the force for four years, a proud German shepherd that was involved in more than 100 arrests; yet he lost his life recently by being stabbed repeatedly when attempting to take down a criminal. The man, Paul Vukmavich, 27, is facing various charges including possession of stolen property, dangerous driving, criminal flight and resisting arrest. There was no mention of the death of this dedicated service dog, with a charge of animal cruelty! It is the belief that those charges need to be escalated for killing such a prized animal in the line of duty! Officer Carriere stated, We need to adjust the Criminal Code at some point in time and this is obviously a good time to do that. Protection of the service dogs is an issue the officers have been fighting for a long time even though some Provinces do have laws to protect their service animals. These laws can carry a penalty of up to two years in jail for anyone who harms a service dog, which includes dogs working with police. However, the penalties are a little more stringent, possibly including up to five years behind bars for anyone who knowingly or recklessly poisons, injures or kills a law enforcement animal.
