Police have charged two men after an alleged street race at Arncliffe. About 10.10pm on Saturday (30 November 2013), Traffic and Highway Patrol officers were performing speed-enforcement duties on the M5 East Motorway. Police will allege they observed a Subaru sedan and a Toyota sedan driving next to each other in lanes one and two. They were travelling at alleged speeds of up to 150km/h in the 80km/h zone. Officers stopped the vehicles and spoke with the drivers, both 18-year-old men. They were each issued with a field court attendance notice to answer charges of participate in street race and exceed the speed limit by more than 45km/h. They are due to appear in Kogarah Local Court on 17 December 2013. Police also suspended both men’s driver’s licences for six months. “Street racing is extremely dangerous for not only those involved, but anyone who happens to be driving on the road at the same time,” NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, said. “There would still have been a good deal of traffic on the M5 at that time of night, which makes this incident particularly concerning. “Traffic and Highway Patrol officers will be out in force in the lead-up to Christmas to curb irresponsible driver behaviour and keep down the road toll,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said. Other recent traffic incidents of note include: * About 10am yesterday (Sunday 1 December 2013), police conducting speed-enforcement duties on the Hume Highway at Jugiong detected a B-double truck travelling at an alleged speed of 115km/h. The speed limit for heavy vehicles is 100km/h. Officers stopped the vehicle, which was carrying 19 tonnes of cardboard boxes. The driver was issued with a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 10km/h, and a defect notice for a non-compliant speed limiter. * Traffic and Highway Patrol officers conducted a heavy-vehicle random drug testing (RDT) operation on the Barton Highway, near Yass, between 27 and 28 November 2013. Police conducted a total of 299 RDTs, with two positive results. Officers also issued 111 traffic infringements notices and seven vehicle defect notices, including two non-compliant speed limiters. Another RDT operation was conducted in Kings Cross Local Area Command on 29 and 30 November, resulting in seven positive results from 257 tests, and six PCA charges from 1030 random breath tests. * A 25-year-old P-plater will appear in court early next year charged with high-range PCA. Just before 11pm on Friday (29 November 2013), police stopped a green Ford Fiesta on Victoria Road, Werrington. Officers submitted the driver to a random breath test, with an alleged positive result. The driver was taken to St Marys Police Station, where a breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.200. The man was issued with a field court attendance notice, and is due to appear in Mount Druitt Local Court on 9 January 2014.
