Police protection available to all, says minister: KUALA TERENGGANU, Sept 14 —The Home Ministry is prepared to protect any individual regardless of their political inclination, said its minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He stressed that the police would carry out their duties in a professional manner regardless of the political affiliation of the individuals concerned. He told this to reporters in commenting on the death threats received by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng through Twitter and Inspector-general of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar on Facebook. He said the threat against Khalid was connected to ongoing police’s Ops Cantas to weed out gangsterism and secret society activities. He added that he had been contacted by individuals close to the father of the suspect claiming that his son was victimised. “I have replied by saying the question of death threats is not a game or for the purpose of making a joke. “However, I will be ‘colour blind’. Regardless of opposition or government figures, I will give protection,” he said. Ahmad Zahid had earlier visited the Terengganu Police Contingent Headquarters here today. He also said that he would direct the Penang police chief to closely investigate the case involving Guan Eng in a professional manner and hoped the incident would not be repeated. Guan Eng had lodged a police report on the death threat againist him yetserday. Also yesterday, a direct sales trader, N. Murugan, 33, from Negeri Sembilan and staying in Melaka, surrendered at the Cheras police station in Kuala Lumpur to help in investigations on the death threat against the IGP. In the incident, an individual who dubbed himself Murugan Nagaretinam on Facebook wrote a statement in English “Can anyone just hire gunman to shoot down this police or IGP?” The statement was believed to have been made following the success of the police in shooting dead two men believed to be members of the secret society Gang 36 in Cheng, Melaka. — Bernama dlvr.it/3ykG9Z
