Policing in the US: in light of the recent events, protests and - TopicsExpress

Policing in the US: in light of the recent events, protests and media coverage, it is too easy to generalize and condemn all police officers as bad cops. There are over 780,000 sworn police officers in our country. The vast majority are good cops and serve their communities with pride and ethically. I know this first hand. After 27 yrs as a Sgt on the NYPD my father retired honorably and loved his job. The same for his brother, my uncle Charlie, who as a 30 yr Lieutenant on NYPD, was loved by the citizens, store owners and neighborhood councils he worked in. My youngest brother, Robert, currently a NYPD mounted police officer is following in their footsteps and each day while riding his horse thru Times Square or Coney Island interacts with dozens of tourists and citizens drawn to a uniformed officer sitting smartly on a regal horse. They, like the vast majority of officers, are good men and women serving us with honor and pride in keeping us safe, resolving our problems and interacting with the communities they serve via athletic leagues, big brother programs, youth activities, etc..... Sure there are a small minority that are bad cops. Just like in any other occupation. And they should be held accountable swiftly. But please keep in mind that every hour of every day there are 780,000 of our fellow citizens policing honorably, putting their lives at jeopardy, and proudly serving their communities. Today, I want to say thank you to all the good cops!
