Polio was so-o-o-o-o close to being beaten, the only nations left with polio being Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. But the Taliban *continue* to murder often-young vaccine workers traveling among villages in Pakistan (its been going on for years). (Want to be a vaccine worker in Pakistan?). Murders and war have now caused the WHO to declare a health emergency because of a resurgence of polio in the past six months, and a spread of the polio virus to Syria, Iraq, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Israel and Somalia. So far in human history, smallpox is the only infectious disease we have eradicated. We came so close with polio.
