Political capital. And state capacity. Understand these two - TopicsExpress

Political capital. And state capacity. Understand these two concepts and the current political landscape makes much more sense. Read William Blum, Killing Hope; Samuel P Huntington, Political Order in Changing Societies; Steven Waldman, The Bill: How Legislation Really Becomes Law; Scott, Seeing Like A State; Theda Skocpol, States and Revolutions; Nils Christie; A Suitable Amout of Crime; and the Marx-Engels reader (or Das Capital vols 1-2) (for its discussion of reification, alienation, and the history of class struggle and its role in the history of the state). Also look at the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Michel Foucalt, Gramasci, John Stuart Mill, and Martha Nussbaum. Oh, and be sure to read Simmels Philosophy of Money, and Carl Schmidts The Concept of the Political, and Max Webers Politics as a Vocation. This short bibliography is like a flashlight in the dark: things will become all the more clear once you begin to focus them on todays contemporary reality.
