Polity and Governance......Imp. Article for GS Paper, IAS Prep 2014 │ Law Commission of India │ Unlike the Finance Commission or the Election Commission which are constitutional bodies Law Commission of India is not a constitutional body, neither it is a statutory body. It is just an ad hoc and advisory body established by an order of the central government whose work is to make recommendations for law reforms such as amendments and updations of prevalent and inherited laws. None of these recommendations are binding upon the Government. Composition Its membership primarily comprises legal experts, who are entrusted a mandate by the Government. The Commission is headed by a full-time Chairperson and consists of four full-time members and the Law Secretary and the Secretary Legislative Department as an ex-officio Member. Who will head the law commission is completely at the discretion of the Government. However, it is a convention that a retired judge of Supreme Court heads it. The Commission is established for a fixed tenure (generally three years) and works as an advisory body to the Ministry of Law and Justice. States can also constitute their own law commissions.
