Pork Barrel Scam: The recent Pork Barrel Scam is indeed a shocker. Scores of Congressmen and Senators alike implicated in a sophisticated conspiracy to launder their respective District allotments for personal gain. Rumors have it that it had been a long hidden scam by our legislators. Now, a dummy-conduit, in the person of Janet Napoles Lim, is speaking out and washing her hands, pointing to the willing participants of the money-laundering scheme. Ms. Lim is apparently the incorporator of a number of fictitious foundations, where the legislators funneled their District fund allocations. Law experts argue that Ms. Lim is exempt from being a State witness for the gravity of her participation, evidently pocketing billions of pesos for her family for laundering the legislators’ pork barrel. While the masses, on the other hand, are clamoring for a “full account” of the money-laundering machination, demanding for a complete line-up of the conspirators. This has now become a national scandal that’s been blown out of proportion. The image of the Philippines has been tarnished to a great degree. Charges of graft, embezzlement and malversation of government funds have been hurled at the legislators. But, is this really the controlling issue ? Well, I believe that our “national image” outweighs the squabbles over our government inadequacies. What good does it really bring to broadcast to the entire world that our government leaders are proficient swindlers and snatchers ? Does that lure more foreign investors into our country ? I think, we ought to be more “selective” in our broadcasting, choosing instead to proliferate the “good traits” of the Filipinos before an International audience. Why can we not instead promote and broadcast our countless beaches in the 7,100 islands that comprise the Philippines ? Do you think that will stimulate our tourism ? In the recent government scandal, I hereby lodge my dissent, and hereby move to bottle the Pork Barrel issue, for the preservation and advancement of our national image. In this connection, I hereby endorse a media black-out to inhibit the Pork Barrel scandal within the chambers of the Ombudsman, and other pertinent government agencies. I hereby move to prohibit any news broadcast or bulletin that tends to smear the image of the Philippines, for the purpose of protecting the national image of our country.
