Port of Davao, Philippines Saturday, August 23, 11:14 AM I like the heels of a loaf of bread. Theyre just as much bread as the rest of the loaf, but for some reason, which is actually beyond me to grasp, some people refuse to eat them. They get left in the almost empty sack like an elementary school science project on how and why mold spores grow, while the choice part of the bread has long since been consumed. Oh, and when unwanted company drops in just at lunch time, the heels of that loaf can be quickly served up to the hapless guests to hurry them along. So then you can eat the good stuff! And the heels can be used very well here in the Islands for trapping mice and rats. See, the Philippine variety of these rodents dont eat cheese...yeah, I know...go figure...but they LOVE bread and the heels are usually tough enough to stay for the little critters to get into real trap-trouble. But I wonder sometimes in my pondering moments, about wasting good bread heels. And anyway, the mice and rats can find their own food easily enough! Now, all this ridiculous rambling actually has a point to it. Why is it that undesirable things, and things snubbed like bread heels are left in favor of the more pleasing stuff? Like life in general, often what seems distasteful proves to be of greatest benefit. But without being put to the test, how will one ever know? And spiritual life is this way as well. I speak from the vantage point of serving in places far away and often very unusual and downright dangerous. Ask anyone around here...they will tell you that the better option is to go home. But I am...home. It usually comes down to what a body will do or wont do and not so much what one can do or cant do. That cliche` is valid---Where theres a will, theres a way. Like eating those two bread heals from every loaf...yes, there are two. And i found them in my little sack the other day at breakfast time. All the rest had been eaten, but the two remained and I had the will to eat them since i was hungry. I put them into the toaster and they popped out looking like all the rest do! Im thinking that life is a big toaster sometimes folks...and maybe you, as I so often do, feel like, well....toast. But a little butter and a lot of nice jam will make all the difference...hey! God bless you all. I am praying for you! I will post again....
