Portosystemic Shunt aka liver shunt. It is a condition where the blood vessel bypasses the liver, preventing the blood from being detoxified. This build-up of toxins in the system can cause Hepatic Encephalopathy. Symptoms such as circling, running into walls, head pressing, blindness, sudden aggression, drooling, and seizures may occur. Surgery can be done to help close the vessel in some cases. Sometimes there are several shunts. Some of the livershunt kittens like Alex are being medically managed with lactulose which helps pass the ammonia from their system to help prevent the symptoms. Some of the kittens/cats also take antibiotics like amoxicillian or metronidazole. Alex is only taking lactulose and he gets some greek yogurt as a probiotic mixed in with his prescription Royal Canin LP Modified C food. I also cook most of his meals now which consist of chicken, peas and carrots, squash, pumpkin and cottage cheese. This gives him more variety than the prescription and he has been doing really well with it. For more information on livershunts in cats, you can visit Newts site: catlivershunt
