Portrait of a Raped Woman -------------------------------------------- She stood silent in the street Her form was withered and much weak Her hairs dishevelled, her dress was torn From no angles she looked me a bit warm It was definitely a December dawn There was dense fog to feel any one forlorn I was on my routine morning walk Her presence signalled me to know the actual cause What was wrong that she stood on the pavement That in no way fitted for a lady of some fame I stopped suddenly to ask her if she was in trouble Was it convenient for her to divulge the sordid truth? What made her stand to stay and stare When the winter was growing daily so unfair? She raised her eyebrows to meet my eyes I could visualise with a sense of fright She was painful to the inmost core of her being She told me everything without any saying I understood she had been definitely a victim To the lust of some beast with man like skins I didnt know what to do at the moment To call the police or an emergency ambulance I wasnt sure what would be the best To make the woman cosy and at rest I asked her if she needed any police help She negated my offer looking more upset Would you like to have a cup of tea? I requested her feeling a surge of sympathy That overwhelms me often when I see Any human being in distress on the street! At my request she nodded her head And began walking in a staggering gait She followed me just like a shadow I felt relieved passing through the streets very narrow She was a bit hesitant to enter my house She must have her womanly fears and doubts! She looked at the nameplate stuck on the door I was a social worker , now she was sure! I lived alone due to personal reasons My wife lived away in a different region She was an artist who needed her absolute freedom I did respect her will with a slavish submission! The woman was silent and not a single word She had yet spoken that I could have heard I prepared tea and sat by her side Keeping safe distance like a good guy! Now tell me what went wrong with your being? Who did it to you? I know what youre feeling! This world is such a cruel place Where nowadays none is much safe! And women are often made the victims Of violence, rapes and dirty human whims! Tell me, I am a champion of womens cause I will fight for you in the spirit of lands laws! But who said,I have been raped, I havent met that disgusting fate Till now, I am so sure of my courage None has got the guts to rape me or outrage My honour or my pure virgin state Perhaps you dont know me, man, I am the new city magistrate! It was my first appearance for a mock test How people react to a woman in distress! I was almost on the brink of a reawakening Oh,my God,what a fool I made myself this morning! Before I could say something in apology The woman laughed boisterously saying she was sorry For me but it couldnt be the other way Since that was the official duty of a city magistrate !
