Possibly its my reaching a particular age, but Ive started noticing a slight trend in my peer group (which leans very technical) of distrust of new technology. Rather than being a matter of interest or disinterest in the gizmo-du-jour its beginning to be I read that I should be wary of what this does, and I dont understand what it does, so Im afraid of it and wont use it or I have something that works, why would i want something new?. Explaining what the use case for a particular feature is for leads, as often as not, to I wouldnt use that feature, so it shouldnt exist. and a desire for simplicity and easy-to-understand single use gizmos. Not 100% understanding the terminology and not having the interest (ability? time?) to pick up the basics that would let them understand it seems to lead to distrust of the system they dont understand. I doubt most of them would admit that; their expressions of fear and confusion are usually dressed up as other concerns (e.g. privacy, security, value-for-money, mistrust of government or corporations). Those other concerns are certainly valid in some contexts, but not necessarily in the situations theyre used in. I wonder if the viral fear and uncertainty on social media that both triggers and feeds on this might be my generations Fox News or Ten things in your house that will kill you! News at Eleven!.
