Possums may be cute little animals, but in the wrong place they - TopicsExpress

Possums may be cute little animals, but in the wrong place they can create havoc and damage. For the past two days we have had a possum loose in our Memorial Hall Shop. It must have crawled down one of the original Kerosene light vents. then dropped to the floor and was desperate to escape. On the first night the major casualty was an 1870s Sessions Cottage Clock ($500.00) and a few vases another $500.00. We set the possum trap with a lovely juicy apple and hoped for the best. This morning I went to check, the possum trap had been sprung, but no possum. This time the damage was enormous, two pairs of very large Meiji period Japanese vases and other shards of china spread all over the Hall, which will have to be cleaned up before opening. We found the possum, I called in Annie our miniature fox terrier who sat in front of a cabinet in the lay-by room and said the possum is in there, behind that large print and if you move it for me, I will catch your possum. The possum was hiding in the cabinet a meter from the trap, the dog was determined to join it, I grabbed the possum by the scruff of the neck to save it from the dog, the possum bit or scratched my ungloved hand as I bundled it into the trap. The dog wanted to join it in the trap. It was quite a friendly possum, bemused by all the fuss. I explained to it that It would have to be relocated into a very fine and large gum tree, with lots of hollows next to the nearby reservoir. A very short walking trip later it was set for release. No it said I am not leaving this trap. After much shaking and general encouragement it finally with reluctance climbed the tree, and left me to clean up the mess. Possums are very nice creatures when they live in trees by the creek.
