Post 471 collection supplies for tornado victims Frank Lewis PDT Staff Writer Dozens of tornadoes and intense thunderstorms ravaged the Midwest Sunday, leaving six people dead and virtually decimating the town of Washington, Ill. Now, members of American Legion Post 471 are asking the public to contribute supplies to be taken to Washington, Ill. “Tyler Hodge, who is one of our trustees, was in Moore, Okla. this past year, and he helped coordinate some of that out there,” Mike Bell, First Vice Commander of Post 471, said. “So, as soon as these tornadoes hit, he said, ‘Mike, we’re going to do something.’” Bell said the first assistance the Post received came from Glockners Auto. “They (veterans) have contacted Glockners and they have donated a 15-foot box truck,” Bell said. “I got with Daymar College to utilize the facility at the parking area to load it.” The truck was to be on the Daymar parking lot today at 9 a.m. for people to bring relief supplies. Bell said the post will be collecting from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day, and until noon on Friday when they are expected to leave for Illinois and deliver the supplies. “We’re asking the public to bring things such as blankets, first aid kits, shovels, non-perishable food and water,” Bell said. “They were talking about the possibility of some Teddy Bears for the kids, some dog food, gloves, dust masks, mops, brooms, different things like that.” Bell said members of Post 471 have been calling and going to area businesses to ask for donations. Bell is asking any area resident who is out shopping over the next few days to pick up supplies and bring them to Daymar. He said anyone wishing to donate money to buy fuel for the truck would also be appreciated. Daymar College is located at 3879 Rhodes Avenue in New Boston.
