Posting 1413 There was a time when Tamil keerthanas & songs enjoyed only a secondary status when it came to Carnatic music. The business baron Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar had to correct this state of affairs in the forties, by crusading the Tamil Isai Movement. The Music College of the Annamalai University, founded by him & headed by Tiger Varadachari, held a symposium to promote the status of Tamil as a music language. This conference was attended by the leading musicians of that time. Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavatar, who marked the show, did a musical discourse on the “Greatness of Tamil Music and its Songs.” As per Chennai Historian Sriram. V, The Music Academy and the Indian Fine Arts Society became the rallying points for those opposed to this agenda of Tamilisation. Thereby, Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar, at the instance of Rajaji, founded a new body, named it as Tamil Isai Sangam, to propagate Tamil songs. Leading musicians such as MS, MKT, KB Sundarambal, GNB and Madurai Mani Iyer, did concerts in Tamil for this outfit. Raja Annamalai ManRam was eventually built to promote exclusive Tamil Concerts. Cut to our own subject song today, Ulagin mudhal isai Tamizh isaiye by TMS & PBS it forms a jugalbandhi sequence, from the film Thava Puthalvan (1972). Music by MSV & lyrics by Ksnnadasan. youtu.be/P9GHMCQGlV8
