Posting from personal diary that Radioman 3rd Class Ernest J. Mesaros of the PT-308 – 22 September 1944 - 70 years ago today - Up at 0600 Had breakfast and got underway for Bastia to have our S.O. repaired. On way we stopped in Nice and spent three hours there. Underway at 1800. Received some mail and went to the movies and saw “Chandon” Hit the sack at 2200. From the MTB Squadrons War Diary PT Base Calvi closed; all personnel and base equipment transferred to PT Base Maddalena by LST. Missions: Mission No. 552: PTs 554 (Senior Officer, Lieutenant R. L. Pope, Jr., USNR), 556 and 560 departed Bastia to patrol Cap Vado-Genoa. No enemy contacts were made. Mission No. 553: PT 559 (Lieutenant R. E. Nagle, USNR, Commanding) with British MTBs 422 (Senior Officer, Lieutenant A. Blomfield, RN), and 376 departed Bastia to patrol Genoa-Sestri Levante. No enemy contacts were made. Patrol was engaged by shore batteries; no casualties. Mission No. 554: PTs 208 (Senior Officer, Lieutenant D.M. Craig, USNR), 204 and 217 departed Bastia to patrol Sestri Levante-Ferale Rock. No enemy contacts were made. Mission No. 555: PTs 302 (Senior Officer, Lieutenant T. B. Creede, USNR) and 303 departed Ste. Maxime to patrol Cap Martin-Ventimiglia. No enemy contacts were made. Mission No. 556: PTs 307 (Senior Officer, Lieutenant E. Wilson, USNR) and 304 departed Ste. Maxime to patrol Ampeglio-San Remo. No enemy contacts were made. Dispatches: Dispatch to NCWTF advised Radio Calvi closed down 220400A Sept 22. Pictures below are a map of the Area of Operations and the PTs in their new base at Maddalena.
