Posture Posture Posture Posture - I know Physios and Pilates Instructors are well known for nagging about this so surely that makes me twice as bad?! There is a difference between dragging yourself upright and pulling your shoulders back than relaxing into a posture that supports the natural curves of your spine and avoiding un-necessary muscle fatigue. The rule I always use it should be comfortable to hold the position but may not feel 100% natural as it may be different from your current positioning. Such a common problem with poor postures, especially related to stress and computer work is tension in your trapezius muscle (pictured below). A good way to relax this muscle is to hunch your shoulders up to your ears, draw them backwards then drop and relax them down in a circular motion. This will open up through your chest and bring your cervical and thoracic spine to a more natural position, helping improve your posture. Niggling aches here can be helped by applying heat for 10min (via a hot water bottle, wheat bag or a pop to Barbados) then bring your ear to shoulder stretching through the side of your neck letting the opposite arm hang down heavily by your side. You can use your other hand to bring the head over more to increase the stretch (pictured below). Placing a firm pressure through your thumb over a point of tenderness for 5 sec and relax and repeat until the pain starts to calm also can help ease trigger points within the muscle. Or you can book a treatment with myself and Ill do all the hard work for you!!!
