USA Todays headline story is about the disproportionate arrest of blacks in most jurisdictions in the US -- not just in Ferguson, Mo. In Ferguson, blacks are arrested at a rate three times higher than non-blacks. USA Today examined FBI data for 3,538 police departments across the US. The data showed that 45 percent of these police departments have a greater disparity in black arrests than Ferguson. In 2 percent of the police departments nationwide, blacks are arrested at a rate 10 times higher than non-blacks. Blacks are arrested at the same rate as non-blacks, or at a lower rate, in only 5 percent of police departments. This story is being reflected by local newspapers in Palm Springs, CA, Rochester, NY, and Poughkeepsie. A short front-page story in the Poughkeepsie Journal reports the same pattern in Dutchess County jurisdictions. The worst case was in Hyde Park, with a 4.1 disparity. Next worst was the Town of Poughkeepsie, with a disparity of arrest.
