Pragmatism lost. I really wish that economic responsible conservatives could sit the Tea-Party-Wing-Nuts down and explain the debt ceiling to them...and why the U.S. losing our credit rating would be catastrophic to the world economy. Plus it would be great for them to explain that the U.S. debt burden is declining. That’s right – it’s going down, not up. Then they could show them how we just cut $85 billion from the budget, with pie-charts and power-points and shit. Then maybe a Rockefeller Republican could explain that the debt is not the dollar amount, but its size relative to that of the economy. Just as a wealthy family easily can handle a mortgage that would crush a poor person, a large economy can handle a much bigger debt than can a smaller one. Then maybe a war hero like John McCain or Bob Dole could explain why showing up to a rally at the gates of the White House asking for Obama to respect U.S. Veterans....while carrying the flag of a sworn enemy of the United States (Confederate) or telling the President “put the Quran down, to get up off his knees, and come out with his hands up” is not a super way to win over the “Minivan Moderates” of the country. But, unfortunately this is not the season for listening, being intellectually honest or to be a molder of consensus.
