Prayer: God, may I never seek you to guide my future plans more - TopicsExpress

Prayer: God, may I never seek you to guide my future plans more than I seek to live in your will for my present everyday. Amen. The New Testament has much more to say about God’s will for our present than for our future. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus instructs us to first desire the Lord, and trust Him for our future without worry: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself” (Matthew 6:33-34). We often struggle with seeking God’s will for our future, especially as it pertains to career. We want to have an impact for the Lord in our work, and so we pray for a meaningful job by which we can reach others for God’s glory. But the reality of the 9-to-5 may discourage us, making us feel as though the impact we wanted to have has been snuffed out. However, Jesus has called us to be salt and light in our communities. A wise interpretation of Matthew 6:33 wouldn’t throw in the towel and pray for another opportunity, but rather continue seeking the Lord’s Kingdom in the current workplace. Thereby, trusting that God is working out His will and ministering to our souls as we serve Him and love others. “The will of God concerns the present more than the future; it deals with our motives as well as our actions; it focuses on the little decisions we make every day, even more than the big decisions we make about the future. The only time we really have both to know and to do God’s will is the present moment. We are to love God with heart, soul, mind, and strength, and we are to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. These are the basic responsibilities Jesus challenges us to pay attention to” (Jerry Sittser). [Knowing the Will of God, 5.25.14]
