Prayer Request: A FAN JPIC member asks that FAN members join in prayer with a Missouri community on July 31st. West End Landfill in Bridgeton is the site of hazardous nuclear waste from a chemical plant enlisted by the US government in the 1940’s to produce nuclear reactive materials in the creation of the atomic bomb. Today the 40,000 tons of nuclear waste is in a landfill where a fire deep in the mountain of the landfill is making its way toward the nuclear waste. If the fire reaches the waste, at the very least, smoke carrying radioactive particles will be released and impact the whole St. Louis/St. Charles region. The site is also over an aquifer and on a flood plain in a seismically active zone. Families who want to relocate are unable to sell their properties. Tomorrow, July 31, at 10:00 AM CST, the first public prayer vigil will be held at the site, urging that the nuclear waste be removed from this urban area and taken to federal repositories. Please join this community in prayer that there will be a resolution that serves the common good.--Sr. Marie.
