Prayer and the Word Acts 6:4 “But we will give ourselves - TopicsExpress

Prayer and the Word Acts 6:4 “But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and the ministry of the Word.” (NKJV) October 16, 2013 Our Helper the Holy Spirit Scripture Reading of the Day: John 14:15 – 18 Scripture Verse of the Day: John 14:16 – “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.” As I was considering this passage, I decided to go back and read the whole of chapter fourteen. It struck me how much information Jesus put into very few words. I continued reading chapter fifteen as well. It was like the words of Jesus were electric this morning and I couldn’t stop reading. As I thought about this, it appeared to me that this is one of the things the Holy Spirit does in our lives is draw us closer to Jesus and His words. The thought just came to me that our helper, the Holy Spirit, is Jesus gift to us to help us understand the things of God better in our lives. At the same time there are many things we will never understand totally till we get to heaven. Listen to what Jesus says about our helper, the Holy Spirit. Jesus starts out, “And I will pray the Father…” Jesus asks the Father on the behalf of the disciples because He knows His time is short here on earth. I wonder how many times Jesus today asks the Father for something on our account. I think it is probably more than we realize. Because of Jesus great love for those who come to Him, it is something that Jesus does for us. In this case Jesus has a specific request for the disciples and all believers, “…and He will give you another Helper…” When Jesus uses the word, “…another…” He wants us to know that the Helper or Comforter is the same as He is, but at the same time different. In this verse we see a picture of the trinity. The Greek word, Παράκλητος, which we get the word Helper or Comforter carries the idea of a friend who comes alongside if us to help us with things we can’t figure out on our own. I would say the Holy Spirit is our friend, guide, helper, comforter, defender, and convector or our souls. Jesus finishes this verse with, “…that He may abide with you forever.” Jesus says in verse eighteen, “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” The trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, are with us always as we travel this human existence of ours. Prayer: Jesus, we thank you for giving us the gift of the Holy Spirit and not leaving us orphans in a sinful world.
