Pre-Call MA Intellectual Encounters of the Islamicate World 21 June 2013 For the first time in the academic year 2013-14 (starting on 14 October 2013), the Freie Universität Berlin is offering a one-year MA program titled "Intellectual Encounters of the Islamicate World". The overall goal of this course of study is to provide the graduate students with a thorough understanding of the deep and manifold interconnections between Muslim, Jewish and Christian intellectual output during Medieval times. The students will acquire expertise in a broad spectrum of aspects of the Islamicate world, such as rational theology, philosophy, logic, exegesis, mysticism, law and legal methodology as well as material culture and social history. Emphasis will be placed on primary texts in the original language (Arabic). The primarily web-based, English-spoken MA program will also include three actual classroom meetings during the academic year (the Introductory Week as well as two colloquia [of two weeks each] at the end of both Winter and Summer term) during which the students and teachers will come together for discussion, teaching and examination.
