Prep Basketball: Del Norte upends Fortuna 48-40 in Crescent City By Aaron Finley, For The Times-Standard POSTED: 01/23/15, 11:23 PM PST | 0 COMMENTS CRESCENT CITY >> Siera Fitzhugh scored a team-high 11 points, as the Del Norte Warriors evened their Big 5 record at 2-2 with a 48-40 victory over the Fortuna Huskies at Crescent City Friday evening. After playing to a 20-20 deadlock heading into the locker room at halftime, the Warriors opened the third quarter with a 10-1 run to take a 30-21 lead. The two teams exchanged defensive stops for most of the remainder of the period before Morgan Harwood drained a 3-point goal to cut the deficit to 32-26 with just under a minute remaining in the quarter. That momentum was short lived though as Del Norte’s Breanna Long hit a trey of her own to close the period, as the Warriors took a 35-26 advantage into the final quarter. Trailing by nine, the Huskies came out with a definite purpose on both ends of the court to begin the final period, getting the ball to playmaker Nicole Johnson or pounding it inside to Courtney Christensen, both of whom were mired in foul trouble for a majority of the first three quarters. Johnson finished with a game-high 20 points, 10 of those coming in the final quarter. Although Christensen may have only tallied three points, the Huskies center still wreaked havoc on the backboards and altering shots. The plan worked to near perfection, as Johnson scored five points on two straight possessions to open the fourth, helping the Huskies stay well within striking distance with 5:40 still remaining on the clock. However, each time the Huskies made a run, the Warriors seemed to have an answer whether it was Fitzhugh, Regin Loftin and Peyton Healy hitting timely shots from the perimeter or Jordan Babich finding daylight on the interior. Following a Fitzhugh 3-point goal that extended the Warriors lead to 41-33 at the 3:04 mark and with the Huskies struggling to find the basket on their own offensive end of the floor, the Huskies were forced to extend their pressure defense and foul for the remainder of the evening. The Warriors were able to withstand the pressure defense and either get to the free throw line or convert open looks at the rim, eventually extending the advantage to 46-33 and all but put the game out of reach.
