Prescribed burn at Ngarkat A prescribed burn is planned for a section of the Ngarkat Conservation Park near Lameroo for Thursday , 8 May 2014, weather conditions permitting. • The prescribed burn will start at 11am and should be complete by 5pm. • It will take place inside Ngarkat Conservation Park, 2km east of Baan Hill Track and 5km north of Piggery Track, which is approximately 40km south of Lameroo. • The area to be burnt is approximately 500 hectares. • Smoke may affect the Baan Hill Track during the burn. The burn will be carried out by the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR). DEWNR Regional Fire Management Officer Brett Stephens said the burn was part of a state-wide program of prescribed burning in high-risk public land areas this autumn. “The burn is intended to reduce fuel in the designated area to limit the potential spread and impact of future bushfires,” he said “We particularly want to reduce fuel in this area of the park to further protect old mallee growth to the north of the site. “Even though a significant area of the park was affected by bushfire earlier this year, prescribed burning is still required as an ongoing tool to reduce the risk of a bushfire spreading elsewhere in the park in future. “Creating strategically-located, fuel-reduced areas through prescribed burning is essential in helping to reduce the potential spread and impact of bushfires on communities and the environment by providing earlier containment options for firefighters.” A list of the week’s planned burns is available on the DEWNR website, at environment.sa.gov.au/firemanagement/Burns_and_bushfires. Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice. Fire crews will remain on site until safe to leave and will continue to patrol the area in following days.
