On Sunday, June 16th we celebrate our fathers; those living and deceased. To all my brothers in the lodge, Happy Father’s Day! Enjoy your day of rest - you deserve it. Let us never forget their strength as their lives are given many challenges as a man, husband, parent and grandparent throughout their lifetime. Although my own dad will be gone forty years this coming November, I always remember him and what he stood for in life. He always showed us that with hard work one achieves their goals. Nothing comes easy! He was a true brother to the Sons of Italy and participated in his lodge whenever possible. June is also the month to celebrate the beginning our fraternal organization on June 22, 1905 in New York’s little Italy it all started with Dr. Vincent Sellaro. Here we are one hundred and eight years later, still following his ideas and dreams. Let’s never forget how hard it was for those fathers to leave their mother country of Italy, many leaving their families behind to come to America to begin a new life so they could have their wives and children come later. They travelled by boat and you know it was not cruise line like we know of today, and reached a land where everything was unknown to them. The Order Sons of Italy helped those people to develop their lives in the new found land. June also brings us the grand lodge convention beginning on June 27th at the Marriott Orlando Airport where Bob Dorries, Antoinette Leone Ruzzier, Sandee Paoloemilio, Carolyn and Tony Cianciotta will represent your lodge. It will be a busy four days for us. We wish both Carolyn and Tony our best wishes in their election for state positions and appreciate what they have done over the last two years on the state level as well as at the local level. On June 27th we also celebrate the founding of our lodge here in Osceola County. Celebrating our thirty one years in this county is a lot to be proud of. We have had several presidents presiding over your meetings and doing their best to keep the lodge strong. Just think there have been 744 meetings throughout the years to show our support for this fraternal organization and for some of you, you were there for many. There have been challenges at times, but everyone has always come together and been a great support to this lodge and most of all to their heritage. We must continue on this path and continue moving forward bringing on new ideas and bringing in friends and family to our events. Mark your calendars for our next meeting on June 16th as we celebrate our 31st anniversary and the installation of three new members. Happy summertime! Fraternally, Gertrude Dorries Letter From Our President Sons of Italy Happy Birthday to: Fran Barry Carol Costanza Viola Hammock Michael Moscaritolo Andrew Pisciotto Robert Wilburn New Member: Jennifer Barbati Notables Boosters: Charlene DeGori, Joanne Perna, Tony Migliaccio, Lucy Migliaccio, Antoinette Leone Ruzzier, Sandee Paoloemilio, Jerry Testa, Jean Testa, Susie Papsodero, Mike Moscaritolo, Mary Moscaritolo, Tony Cianciotta, Carolyn Cianciotta, Margie Masiello, Maria Uccello, Viola Hammock Don’t forget to call Marge Masiello, our Sunshine lady when you know a member is ill or in the hospital (407-348-4577) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . It’s summertime in Florida, and we want everyone to enjoy the time spent outdoors. However, we all need to be careful of our skin since our days are long and extremely hot. Be sure to use sunscreen products that include broad spectrum SPF 15 or higher. This formula will protect skin from aging, sunburn and cancer. The FDA now requires labels to state how long “water resistant” formulas will protect when you are swimming; either 40 or 80 minutes. Read the labels to get the right type as they come in creams, gels and spray. Lastly, many medicines increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun so check with doctor which sunscreen would work the best for you. Get Well Wishes to: for Sandy Paoloemilio, Jean Testa, Suzie Papsodero, Michael Moscaritolo, Joseph Perrone, and past lodge president Frank Colonna. John Davi Healthy Skin Protection Region II Trustee A state trustee for Region II has been chosen for our lodge by our grand lodge president, Edward Mottola, Jr.; Richard Blum. Richard comes to us from the Deltona Sons and Daughters of Italy Lodge and attended our May scholarship night. It was a pleasure having Richard come to our meeting and hope he will be able to visit frequently. Festa del Papa Unlike here, in Italy, Father’s Day is celebrated on March 19th, which also is St. Joesph’s Day. This day commemorates San Guiseppe - a fatherly symbol of love, compassion, kindness, generosity and acceptance. San Guiseppe or Saint Joseph, father of Jesus Christ is honored on this day. In Italy, it is usually celebrated with grand feasts and fanfare. Households prepare traditional spreads of special Italian breads and cookies, and a day when families show their gratitude to their fathers with favors and gifts. Earlier in history, this day was a national holiday in Italy. Contemporary celebrations include going out in street parades and family get-togethers filled with tasty morsels. Some of these delights are traditional San Guiseppe desserts that vary from region to region. In the south, zeppoles and bigné are prepared, and in the north, frittelle are eaten to mark the occasion. So now, Italian-American fathers go on and celebrate two days of thanks---the American tradition of the third Sunday in June, and now claim Festa del Papa as a special day for you too! Mini Dinner The Mini Dinner will be at Logan’s Roadhouse in Kissimmee by The Loop. on Tuesday, June 25th. Thank you to Joanne Perna for organizing these nights for us, and we hope to see you there. Scholarship Winners This year we are proud to have two lovely ladies receive our Dante medals and $1,000.00 scholarships each. Janae Louise Debeltz was born in Kissimmee to Jerry and Ranae Debeltz graduating in May from St. Cloud High School. Her great grandfather came to America from northern Rome at an early age of 18. He travelled to Minnesota and worked for years in the mining industry supporting his wife and five children; one of whom was Janae’s grandmother, Anna Josephine Louise Amitrano Debeltz. Although Janae never had the pleasure of meeting her grandmother-she was given her middle name, a rosary and a necklace of the Virgin Mary as a keepsake. Janae learned of her grandmothers cooking recipes at an early age and today Janae proudly prepares some of these meals handed down to her. Janae is proud of her heritage and will be taking it with her to the University of South Florida-Tampa beginning this Fall. Janae has received academic honors from the university of South Florida-Tampa Award Scholarship, ranked top 15% of her class, was a member of the National Honor Society, carried duel enrollment at Valencia Community College and starting her freshman year with 24 college credits; six of which coming from the advanced placement courses. Janae plans to major in Biomedical Sciences with a minor in Psychology with plans of continuing on to medical school to study Neurology. In her thank you letter, Janae Debeltz states, “I have many goals, and one-by-one I will reach them, but the first goal is a huge part of getting in the right direction for future success and that is why the Lodge 2523 Sons of Italy scholarship is so important. It gives students like myself the right direction. I am very proud of my Italian heritage and will make you proud with my future efforts to give back to others”. Our second recipient comes from the west side of town known as Celebration. Jaime Kaplan-Perico graduated from Celebration High School two weeks ago with high honors and many attributes to be proud of as she prepares to attend the University of Florida majoring in Healthcare management. Jaime was born in Mineola, New York to parents Robert and Linda. At any early age of seven, Jaime’s dad passed and she grew up learning what a struggle life could be without both parents providing for her. She realized at a young age you must work hard to achieve your goals and has done just that. Jaime attended the International Baccalaureate Program at Celebration High School and has already taken college courses at our local community college getting A’s while working on an internship through Bank of America’s student program. Jaime was hired and worked at the Boys and Girls Club which took her to Washington, DC where she was one of many who packed over 2,000 backpacks for the military families through Operation Homefront. Although Jamie’s relatives are living in New York and not part of her every day life, her Sicilian heritage is very important to her. Jaime says, “my heritage defines who I am- a loving, strong willed Catholic, and one who is close to family”. She feels because of her Catholic upbringing and Italian heritage, she has the grace to speak out when needed and to make a difference by having a strong understanding of what is right. She did just that while presiding over the presidency of Best Buddies, treasurer of the schools’ National Honor Society, vice president of Mu Alpha Theta and more. Jaime ended her high school year learning she was the winner of Disney’s Dreamer and Doer award for the county and was also awarded a full of scholarship to UF. We certainly are proud of both these two fine ladies and wish them well as they move into their future both- being proud of their Italian heritage.
