President Joyce Banda on Thursday evening attended the launch of Freedom from Fistula Foundation in New York where she called on the people to support the foundation as a way of helping many African women in need of help. The Freedom from Fistula Foundation is a foundation by Dr Ann Gloag who built Malawi’s first ever dedicated fistula repair clinic at Bwaila Hospital, in Lilongwe in 2012. President Banda said unlike in the United States, Fistula is a big problem in Malawi. “In your countries, fistula is not discussed, because it barely exists. Your daughters and sisters have good maternity services and can access medical care, but in Malawi, not all women can access health services as a result have complication during delivery that later causes fistula,” said the Malawi leader. Dr Banda who was given a chance to speak about the situation of fistula in Malawi said Malawi is short of trained specialists to treat fistula despite efforts by government and Freedom from Fistula to train Clinician to become equipped in fistula management. Banda then commended the work that Freedom from Fistula Foundation is doing in Malawi. “The Fistula Care Centre is a remarkable centre that provides treatment and recovery facilities for patients, as well as training in basic skills, access to micro-enterprise and micro-agriculture, and enterprise training and financial services. They are not just repairing women; they are helping them to rebuild their lives,” she said
