President Obama called for the strongest possible rules to defend - TopicsExpress

President Obama called for the strongest possible rules to defend and preserve an open internet. Following this announcement, most media companies that supply Internet service and favor a closed Internet felt it where it hurts. Shares of Comcast and the company it wants to buy, Time Warner, plunged by at least 6%. Obama wants no blocking of websites, no slowing of Internet content nor faster delivery tiers. This is direct disparity with FCC Commissioner Tom Wheeler, a former cable lobbyist, who is in favor of them despite the fact that over 3.7 million people have written the FCC to complain about its proposed “closed Internet.” AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast are lobbying FCC to allow them full control of consumer and business Internet speed. Attwell Baker, the president of the CITA-Wireless Association, a lobby group for cable and Internet providers, threatened that Obama’s plan would impose inappropriate regulation on a dynamic industry and would prevent mobile providers ability to invest and innovate. CITA-Wireless lobbies Congress and the FCC on behalf of AT&T and Verizon. Obama also made it clear that the FCC is an independent agency, and ultimately this decision is theirs alone. He added, I believe the FCC should create a new set of rules protecting net neutrality and ensuring that neither the cable company nor the phone company will be able to act as a gatekeeper, restricting what you can do or see online.
