Press Release March 25, 2013 Siskiyou BLUE RIBBON CAMPAIGN April is Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month At its beginnings in 1989, a grandmother tied a royal blue ribbon to her car antenna; grieving for her grandson who had died at the hands of his mother’s boyfriend, she sought to bring attention to his tragic death. Since that time, the blue ribbon has been used nationally during the month of April as a symbol to increase community awareness of the issues of child abuse and neglect. The Siskiyou Community Services Council (CSC), Siskiyou County’s designated Child Abuse Prevention Council, has held a blue ribbon campaign for nearly a decade. In 2010 CSC’s campaign gained a strong ally and a boost to momentum, “We are proud and pleased to be in our 4th year of partnering with Cross Petroleum’s Mountain Counties Supply Stores, whose gas stations and convenience stores offer blue ribbons for a donation, said Jill Phillips, CSC’s Executive Director. Each ribbon carries the donor’s name and is displayed at the store throughout the month of April. Strong participation in this awareness and fund raising event attests to Cross’ caring customers and exemplifies their slogan “Cross Cares for Kids”; and all the donations go directly to local child abuse prevention efforts.” Blue ribbons and a calendar of Family /Community Resource Center events are available at Cross Chevron stations in Dunsmuir, Weed, McCloud, Yreka, Mt. Shasta, and Ft. Jones, and their Spirit station in Mt. Shasta. Aside from April, child abuse prevention is a year around activity for the CSC, who offers evidenced-based parenting education classes countywide through its partnership with the Family and Community Resource Centers and primary program partner, First Five Siskiyou. Resource Centers are located in Ft. Jones, Dorris, Tulelake, Happy Camp, Dunsmuir, McCloud, Mt. Shasta, Montague, and Yreka and a new Resource Center is under development in Weed. “Offering free parenting classes to parents and caregivers in their home community is a great investment in keeping children safe from harm. The risk factors/root causes of abuse and neglect are well known and abusive behavior can be prevented. Evidence has shown children experience a reduction of abuse and neglect when parents have attended parenting classes, receive supportive services and live in a nurturing community, Phillips noted.” For more information on CSC’s Blue Ribbon Campaign, Parenting Education, or to donate to local prevention and education programs, please contact the CSC at (530) 926-5927 or email to: [email protected]
