Press Release This past July the Fire Commissioners of the North Mason Regional Fire Authority approved a resolution that authorizes a ballot measure this November. The measure will ask voters that reside in Mason County Fire District 2 (Belfair and surrounding communities) and Mason County Fire District 8 (Tahuya and surrounding communities) to dissolve their respective Fire Districts. Last November the voters of Mason County Fire District 2 and 8 voted 75% in favor of combining the resources of Mason County Fire Districts 2 and 8 to create a new regional fire protection agency known as the North Mason Regional Fire Authority (NMRFA). The NMRFA took over all emergency service operations and functions from the Fire Districts in January of this year. The NMRFA now provides all fire, emergency medical and emergency services and administration for the areas previously served by Mason County Fire District’s 2 and 8. The NMRFA’s creation has had a tremendous impact in strengthening emergency services for the entire North Mason area. With the NMRFA providing all fire and EMS services in North Mason County, there is no longer a need to maintain Mason County Fire Districts 2 and 8. With the formation of the NMRFA the Fire Districts no longer have a purpose and do not provide any type of public service. In order to eliminate and dissolve the two Fire Districts, Washington State Law requires an affirmative vote of the people. A vote to dissolve Mason County Fire District 2 and 8 will not affect, in any way the emergency services that are now provided by the NMRFA. In fact dissolving the Fire District’s will eliminate the cost and effort related to unnecessary administrative duplication, state reporting and required auditing of the non-operational Fire Districts. A vote to dissolve the Fire Districts will not increase the cost for emergency services.
