Press Statement: Anti-Austerity Alliance (14th January 2015) Irish Water Registration Crisis – only 51% have registered for water charges · A boycott of registration is underway, non-payment of bills will finish Irish Water · Concessions have failed to soften opposition to charges The Anti-Austerity Alliance has said that the government and Irish water are facing a crisis after Irish Water revealed in a meeting with TDs that only 51% of people had fully registered with the company with less than 3 weeks to go to the deadline: Ruth Coppinger TD said “Leaving aside the scepticism with which many people treat figures given out by Irish Water, these figures are an admission of a crisis. The figures are a crisis for both the government and Irish Water. Only 51% (769,000) of the 1.5 million liable households have fully completed and returned the forms, included in this are people who would have registered before the mass movement against the charge begun and others who would have registered without intending to pay. There is clearly a boycott underway. Irish Water sent out 2.1 million packs and claim that 984,000 have been returned but of these 200,000 are from people who are not liable, and 15,000 are forms which have been sent back in protest. This leaves 769,000 packs sent back to be registered of the 1.5 million people who are liable for the charge. Paul Murphy TD said “The message which is being sent to the government is that their concessions have failed. People are engaging in a boycott of the registration process. The real rejection of Irish Water will come when the bills arrive and they are not paid. We will now campaign in communities for an organised campaign of non-payment of the bills when they arrive in April and May.” ENDS Note for Editors: Registration levels to date Of the 2.1 million forms they have issued they claim the following: 984,000 have been returned 15,000 of these are non compliant in the sense of unopened/defaced etc 200,000 are from people claiming they are not liable because they are group water scheme or have their own well 769,000 are from liable people. So overall they have received back 47% of the packs they issued or 46% if you exclude the non compliant returns Of the 1.5 million liable customers 51.2% have returned their forms completed.
