Press release by Pemuda MIC MIC Youth backs Prof Shad Faruqis call to make NUCC a statutory body. MIC Youth fully backs the idea presented by Law professor Shad Saleem Faruqi to make the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) as a statutory body and given powers to prosecute in light to restore unity in our country. We also support the call to form an inter-faith council which will propel a better dialogue with other races and gives a better unity, tolerance and compassion to each other. Forming councils and creating legislative framework should also be accompanied with an awareness/training on the race-relations agenda. As Prof Faruqi said, NUCC should be empowered with a decision-making machinery rather than merely giving recommendations to the government. If we refer to the model used by United Kingdom – Race-relations act 1965, the law delves on anti-discrimination and prompts the creation of the Race-relations board in 1966. Political parties should put their hands together for this sort of legislation that will benefit all and not the Hudud which stirs into controversies. Over the years, various plans on unity have been introduced by the government. Although it hardly achieved its objective, its high time now to take a stronger stand in making unity and inter-faith governance a strong subject that requires a great attention that never should be neglected. MIC Youth calls the government to consider in empowering NUCC and look for better ways in handling hate speech and discrimination crimes. We are also ready to assist the government to draft and provide brainstorm in empowering NUCC. C Sivaraajh MIC Youth Chief
