Press release from the Town of New Glasgow NEW GLASGOW, NS, January 29, 2014...It’s that time of year again. Thursday, February 6th marks the 2014 National Sweater Day by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), Canada’s largest international conservation organization with the active support of more than 150,000 Canadians. Canadians are being calling on to turn down their thermostats and wear a fun sweater to symbolize their commitment to the environment. WWF says this is our opportunity to ignite change and ensure that Canada is on the right path for future generations, our economy and the planet. This is an initiative supported by The Town of New Glasgow to promote energy conservation and action on climate change and environmental stewardship. The Town of New Glasgow is calling on all of its departments and employees to reduce the temperature on each thermostat in their workplace by two degrees on Sweater Day, February 6th, and wear the most stylish or funkiest sweater they have. Each department will choose a finalist to be judged in the Town’s Sweaties that afternoon. As well, East Coast FM 94.1, in partnership with the Town of New Glasgow, is promoting a County-wide Sweater Day campaign. Listeners are asked to SHOW US YOUR SWEATER by submitting sweater pictures to ECFMs Sweater Day Facebook contest event by February 6th at 6am. Prizes will be handed out throughout the day for showing off your best sweater! Prizes are compliments of Town of New Glasgow, Music Shapes New Glasgow Concert Series and Adopt a Library. “Sweater Day is a campaign from coast to coast to coast that continues to gain momentum and inspire Canadians to think about and learn more about energy conservation, reduce their carbon footprints and have an impact on societal behavior that impacts our environment,” says New Glasgow’s Program and Events Manager Carlton Munroe. The Town is also encouraging the community at large to get involved in this national campaign. “Sweater Day is a tangible way to conserve on some energy consumption but more importantly a symbol to raise awareness about how we can do things as individuals and as communities to counter and decrease the impact of climate change and to preserve our environment,” says New Glasgow Mayor Barrie MacMillan.” We are stewards of our community and our environment.” The WWF explains that if every Canadian lowered the heat by just 2º C this winter, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 4 Megatons! Information about National Sweater Day will be shared through the Town of New Glasgow’s Website, Facebook and posters around Town. National Sweater Day is made possible through partial proceeds from the sale of plastic shopping bags in Loblaw banner stores across Canada. Since 2009, Loblaw Companies Limited has donated one million dollars annually to WWF, for a total of six million dollars, to support activities that engage Canadians on climate change and other conservation issues. newglasgow.ca/
