Previous Article Next Article Wilson repeats at Tobago Open Story Updated: Sep 23, 2013 BRAGGING RIGHTS: Aaron Wilson The two young stars of Trinidad and Tobago table tennis clashed at Scarborough Secondary just before press time, yesterday, in the Tobago Open men’s singles final. At the end of their exciting duel, it was 14-year-old Carenage Blasters player Aaron Wilson who had bragging rights. Wilson beat 15-year-old Arun Roopnarine 11-8, 6-11, 11-4, 11-8 to retain his title. The talented teen finished off the match in emphatic fashion, a forehand smash ending Roopnarine’s hopes of a first Tobago Open senior title. In the semifinal round, Wilson turned back a spirited challenge from Everton Sorzano, outlasting his opponent 20-18, 12-10, 13-11, while Roopnarine got the better of Curtis Humphreys 7-11, 12-10, 11-7, 14-12. Aleena Edwards continued her fine run of form this year, capturing the top prize in the women’s singles with a comfortable 3-1 triumph over her mother, veteran chopper Verna Edwards. In June, Aleena captured her tenth National Championship women’s singles title. She followed up last month with singles bronze at the Caribbean Championships in St Lucia, the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) attacker also contributing to T&T’s women’s team success. In yesterday’s championship match, Aleena dropped the first game against her mother, but then dominated the second, before going on to complete an impressive 9-11, 11-2, 11-6, 11-6 victory. Top seed Linda Partap-Boodhan bowed out in the semifinal round, losing to Verna in straight games, 9-11, 6-11, 11-13. On the other side of the draw, Brittany Joseph extended Aleena to five games, Aleena eventually prevailing 6-11, 11-6, 14-12, 7-11, 11-7. In the quarter-final round, Merle Baggoo came close to recording a major upset. The 1963 national champion was 2-0 up in games in her last eight showdown with Partap-Boodhan. The younger player, however, battled back, Partap-Boodhan securing a 6-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-5 victory. On Saturday, Wilson and Jasher De Gannes emerged as the top players, winning two age-group titles apiece. Wilson topped the boys’ under-18 and under-15 events, while De Gannes, who turned 12 on Friday, celebrated her birthday with victories in the girls’ under-15 and under-13 singles. In Saturday’s feature clash, Wilson stopped Roopnarine in three straight games in the under-18 final. Wilson threatened to run away with the match, but more than once Roopnarine clawed his way back. Already leading 2-0 in games, a well-executed backhand top-spin earned Wilson a 10-6 advantage in the third. Roopnarine, though, dug deep, winning the next four points, a brilliant forehand block bringing him on level terms. 10-10. But Wilson would not be denied, a service return error from his opponent handing the Blaster an 11-9, 11-8, 13-11 victory. Wilson was also in winners’ row in yesterday’s Solo National Junior Championship under-15 mixed doubles, the only event that was not contested when that tournament was staged in Tacarigua earlier this month. In the championship match, Wilson combined with his Blasters teammate, Tobago Open girls’ under-18 winner Nalini Boodoo for an 11-5, 11-6, 11-9 triumph over the PowerGen/Cunupia Crew tandem of Amresh Mungal and Gyshan Latchman.
