Printer-Friendly Version Friday, July 26, 2013 Angela Gwynne-Atwater Named Assistant Superintendent of Cluster 6 Angela Gwynne-Atwater, who currently serves as director of curriculum and instruction for Loudoun County Public Schools, has been named Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) assistant superintendent for Cluster 6, effective August 1. She replaces Leslie Butz, who is retiring. “Dr. Gwynne-Atwater is an experienced administrator and educator with the potential to make a substantial contribution to Fairfax County schools,” said Superintendent Karen Garza. “She has experience as a school administrator and administrative supervisor, and understands the importance of including parents and the community in the decision-making process. We welcome Dr. Gwynne-Atwater to the leadership team as assistant superintendent of Cluster 6.” As Loudoun County’s director of curriculum and instruction, Gwynne-Atwater leads instructional supervisors and specialists in the development and execution of instructional plans. She works with the assistant superintendent of instruction and curriculum staff to coordinate the K-12 instructional program. Previously, she served as supervisor of elementary education for Loudoun County schools. She has served as principal of Liberty Elementary School in Loudoun County, principal of Antietam Elementary School in Prince William County Public Schools, and as an assistant principal and classroom teacher in Prince William. Gwynne-Atwater has been an adjunct professor at George Mason University in the College of Education and Human Development since 2007. Gwynne-Atwater has served as a principal mentor for the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and as the northern zone director for the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals. She has published articles in the NAESP Principal magazine and with the Virginia School Counselor Association. Gwynne-Atwater earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in special education from the University of Pittsburgh. She earned certification in supervision and administration from George Mason University and earned her doctorate in education leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech.
