Prior to going to the event yesterday, I could never come close to imagining how amazing my experience would be and how much fun I would have surfing for the first time in my life and being able to get into the water again. I am relatively new to being in a wheelchair and have only just realized the struggles and inequalities being in a wheelchair brings, however for the first time since getting sick and being in a chair I was able to do something amazing and fun, without once thinking about any of the struggles or difficulties I face daily, NOT ONCE! I was finally able to forget all my negative thoughts for that time and just be with people who were there dedicating there time and energy to making sure, that one, I got that damn wetsuit on and off; two, that I didnt end up as breaking news for being found off shore, and three, but most importantly, making sure I had fun and experienced a day of freedom and an incredible sense of hope for the future success. I cannot and will not ever be able to express fully my gratitude to the volunteers and organizers who supported me in every aspect of such a successful event yesterday and of course Jessie for bringing agreeing to bring this event to Nova Scotia. Although I was on the blue team I went out with the red team and to have so many people (some I have never met before) be so supportive and dedicated to making sure my time in the water (which was at the end of the day) was just as exciting and memorable as the others who started at 9am, was incredibly heartfelt. I was quite aware how cold it was and you were in the water for a long time and the fact you made sure I had an incredible experience and that you left it up to me to get out of the water despite how cold you may have been, was very appreciative and thoughtful. I cannot wait to be involved in this again next year and I am confident it will be just as if not more successful because of the amazing volunteers, organizers and participants that are involved. GREAT JOB EVERYONE!
