Private varsities fail UN target on expatriates –Senator Nigeria has yet to meet the United Nations’ requirement for engaging expatriates, which should constitute one-third of the number of lecturers in private universities, Proprietor of Baze university, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said. Baba-Ahmed, who led a team of students from the institution to the United Kingdom, made this known during a visit to the Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. Dalhatu Tafida, on Thursday in London. He said under the UN requirement for categorisation of universities, expatriates must constitute one-third of members of the teaching staff, among other criteria, in order to be graded as a world-class institution. According to him, immigration rules have made it difficult for expatriates to lecture in private universities, which is responsible for the inadequate number of foreign lecturers in such institutions. The News Agency of Nigeria reported on Thursdays that under immigration rules, institutions must prove that expatriates were being employed because of the absence of Nigerian lecturers. Baba-Ahmed said if such excuses were not sorted out with the authorities, the development could constitute a major problem for the universities system. Tafida commended the university for its quality of education and professionalism. He said the decline in the quality education was among reasons parents sponsored their children to take advantage of education technology abroad.
