Project Censored Fall Fund Drive: Please Support Greetings from Project Censored! Every autumn we celebrate the work of independent journalism with the publication of our book. Even while we look back at the past year’s most censored news, we are hard at work on next year’s volume! Our current Fall Fund Drive is now underway and will continue for 12 days only. During that time, we will send an e-mail reminder every couple days, but only for the duration of the drive. We need to raise $15,000 to begin our work on Censored 2015 and to continue to expand our program of hands-on training in media literacy and critical thinking at college and university campuses across the country. We also continue to seek funding to hire a part-time administrative assistant. And, we have a generous $1,000 match to kick things off! Please choose one of the several support levels on the right hand side of this message. Each level offers different premiums of Project Censored’s latest work. You can choose to become a monthly subscriber or you can simply be a one-time donor. We appreciate all the help we get! Looking ahead, we expect to be even more productive over the next few months, but we need your financial support to do our best work. Here are some highlights of what’s in store for 2013-2014: 1. Project Censored co-sponsors a national conference on media democracy in action, in San Francisco, November 1-3, 2013. For over a year, Project Censored has been working with the Union for Democratic Communications (UDC) and the University of San Francisco to bring together more than 200 media activists and scholars from across the country to engage in rigorous critique of corporate media’s commoditization of all social life; to reject all forms of censorship, systematic information exclusion, and propaganda; and to generate and mobilize evidence-based ideas for democratizing media in all formats and genres. As co-sponsors, we at Project Censored have invested hundreds of hours to planning and organizing this conference because we believe meetings like this are crucial to progressive social change—but we will receive no proceeds from it. Your support makes efforts of this sort possible. 2. Project Censored continues to broadcast The News That Didn’t Make the News with a weekly radio show on KPFA (Pacifica) Radio. The Project Censored Radio Show on the Morning Mix continues to expand, and can now be heard on WBAI, the Pacifica affiliate in New York, and on a dozen stations nationwide. As volunteers, co-hosts Peter Phillips and Mickey Huff receive no compensation from KPFA/Pacifica, yet each week they produce original programming with the most important guests on topics few other broadcasters are willing to address. They are currently working to translate a sampling of their most compelling shows into a book, Radical Journalism: Uncensoring the People’s Airwaves 3. Though Censored 2014 was just published, we are already reviewing and posting Validated Independent News stories (VINs) that will be the candidates for next year’s Top 25 list. Associate Director Andy Lee Roth is overseeing the Project’s goal of doubling the number of college and university campuses where students and faculty identify, research, and submit VINs as part of the students’ training in media literacy and critical thinking. In the 2014 book, 18 campuses contributed to the Top 25. With successful outreach and training, we hope to expand our affiliates program to include 36 campuses by the time we publish Censored 2015. We need your support in expanding the campus affiliates program so that more students can benefit from hands-on training of a kind that no other media watchdog organization in the country provides. 4. We truly need funding to hire a part-time administrative assistant. Put simply, no other organization that does as much as Project Censored makes do without some administrative support. It’s a little-known fact, but the reality is, when you order a book or DVD from the Project, in all likelihood it’s the director, or the past director, who addresses the package and mails it to you. We love supporting the US Postal service, as the Koch Brothers and others wage ideological war to privatize it—but funding sufficient to hire a part-time administrator on an ongoing basis would allow us to do our jobs as director, associate director, and board president even more effectively. We are also compelled to share with you some of what we accomplished since the last fund appeal. Due to your wonderful response to our Summer Fund Drive, we met our goal of raising $15,000 in June with gracious support from our readers. Thanks to all of you that helped us make our goal last time around. As a result, in the past months, Project Censored has been able to: 1. Complete the upgrade and redesign of our new website. Thanks to donors’ generous support, the Project Censored website is now a state of the art platform on new expanded servers for studies such as Peter Phillips and Brady Osborne’s “Financial Core of the Transnational Corporate Class” (published on September 9, 2013), Nolan Higdon’s fact-driven exposé on Alex Jones (September 26, 2013), and Peter Byrne’s investigative report on Sen. Diane Feinstein’s husband selling US Post Offices to his friends (October 5, 2013). Each month, 70,000 unique visitors turn to the Project Censored website as a source of Validated Independent News and cutting-edge media research. We provide this content as a public service, free of charge. 2. Expand the public reach of the Project by attending national meetings and film festival screenings of Project Censored The Movie. We held many events and public talks the past few months. Here are some highlights– This summer director Mickey Huff and Media Freedom Foundation president Peter Phillips participated in the annual conference of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters. In October, associate director Andy Lee Roth traveled with filmmakers Christopher Oscar and Doug Hecker to the Bend Film Festival for two sold-out screenings of the Project Censored documentary. Earlier in the summer, Oscar and Hecker won awards for Best Feature Length Documentary and Best Editing of a Documentary Film at the Madrid International Film Festival. Continued participation in events such as these expands the influence of Project Censored and promotes media literacy. 3. Finish Censored 2014: Fearless Speech in Fateful Times. Published by Seven Stories Press, Censored 2014: Fearless Speech in Fateful Times hit bookstores across the country in October to rave reviews: Publishers Weekly summarized: “This book is evidence of Project Censoreds profoundly important work in educating readers on current events and the skills needed to be a critical thinker.” And Daniel Ellsberg not only contributed a piece to the book, he also provided the blurb on the cover. Ellsberg writes, “Censored 2014 is a clarion call for truth telling. Not only does this volume highlight fearless speech in fateful times, it connects the dots between the key issues we face, lauds our whistleblowers and amplifies their voices, and shines light in the dark places of our government that most need exposure.” During the last months of 2013, we urge you to consider what Project Censored—and, more fundamentally, a truly free press—have meant to you in the past year.
