Proloy is based on the Barun Biswas incident at Sutia which created a furore all over West Bengal. However though the story is based on the incident, the film is highly fictionalized and a lot has been added to it to make it more entertaining and a commercial film. Raj had even met the family members of Barun to understand the character of Barun before making the film. Though the incident took place in Sutia, however the film has been shot in Purulia and could be based on incidents taking place anywhere in the country. Parambrata plays Barun, the teacher of a school in who is a public crusader. He is a champion of the masses and a darling of the poor because he looks after their needs and his life is centered around fighting for the cause of people. Yes, a major part of that includes protesting against the rapes by the goons which take place in Sutia . That is what makes him a larger than a life hero for the right reasons and we need several such people among us now. The film also shows what the people of the village (here it is called Dukhiya) village had to undergo and what to what extent the brutality used to suffer. Parambrata is quite good as Barun Biswas and will able to stir the ‘Aagun’ inside people which exists in all of us. Mimi Chakrabarty plays Durga, Barun’s associate and plays her part, but is probably the only character who doesn’t really make an impact on us. Supriyo Dutta and Rudranil Gjosh are very good, specially Rudranil. In fact he is probably the only person suited for this role and is a natural as far as this role is concerned . Paran Banerjee acts as Binod Behari Dutt, Barun’s colleague who acts as his conscience and the guardian of the society and he finished off the goons one by one. Saswata Chatterjee plays a cop (Animesh ) and he is simply too good! With his mannerisms and his one liners which have double meanings and are at times plain expletives, he is a delight! Raj deals with an important topic which has been commercialized for good reasons to make it more appealing to the masses so that they are able to grasp the matter and what it can be done if people really unite for a cause. The system is absolutely corrupt and finished , but if the people rise, can anyone stop them? No. That is the message of the film. That is the reason songs, including an item number has been included. Also to make the character of Barun more like any more of us, a sort of romantic angle (between Durga and Barun though one sided) has been developed . The film is all about the strenThe film leaves quite a few question marks as well. How does Barun wear branded jeans which have a certain style where he spends all his money for the cause of other people? Can he afford them? Even Durga wears expensive clothes. The cops in the village are shown to be wearing gloves once they are working under Animesh. Why? Does a cop of the special branch(Animesh) investigate such cases? More such questions can be raised , but that is not that relevant as far as this film is concerned. What is important is that the film has been made for a good cause, we need to learn and implement certain ideas after watching the film and also this is Raj’s best film till date of people.
