Prospects are looking good for farmers in Rotuma. That was the focul point in yesterdays Farmers workshop, Farming as a business There was a delegation from Rotuma & Fiji that went to Tuvalu to revitalise trade issues, resulting with favourable outcomes for farmers. There are lots of initiatives taken by the agriculture dept with the farmers to increase production to meet export demands. During the animal husbandry session, presented by Vet Aisea Narema, it brought about a lot of intrique and laughter as it involved issues on the reproductory system. Witty and smart..ments were being uttered at the back making it a jovial learning session, not to memtion Aiseas hand movements, incomplete sentences and innuendos as there are ladies around. We learned a lot about the care of livestock and their vulnerability to suffering and diseases due to negligence and ignorance. During the group discussion and presention, there were lots of funny banter and one group trying to outwit the other! Someone mentioned during the grog session that there was a general atmospere of interest to which I replied, certainly because it is a topic that is common to everyone : farming I sincerely hope the young farmers will adapt the concept of looking at farming as a business, instead of a last resort We were told yesterday that a team from Start Your Own Business will be coming soon to Rotuma to conduct trainning to enable the farmers to obtain loans from the banks. Overall, it was indeed an eye opener not only to the farmers but to the whole family as they are encouraged to involve them. Wives were encouraged to accnmpany their husbands to their plantations but someone mentioned that....a different type of farming might take place! TheTeam members were so impressed with the ladies catering AM tea, fekei ulou, pooi, faksara n sensen, faurau, chilled niu. Lunch, ikou seman, ikou puatkau, ia fekei mamas, ia fùn pan, lùm (miti), chicken/noodles, sausage gravy with ulu, ùhi, aana, niu and cordial. A sumptuous meal befitting the occassion as the team really planned the workshop well. National Geograhic documentory video clips were screened, much to the participants delight.
