Psalm 23 In the 1st person Verse 1. I AM. That should be enough—but since you are so bound to earth, so confined to your pasture, let me explain. I AM your Shepherd. As a shepherd out-knows the sheep, so I out-know you. But don’t worry your sheep-head about anything. Because I AM a Good Shepherd—loving you more than you are capable of loving yourself–I AM sure no lack ever shows up on your horizon. If you think it appears, trust me—it is a pasture-confined viewpoint. Verse 2. I AM Food. I know sheep need grazing time, and I know all the best spots… best times of the day, best food. I AM the Pasture I lead you to, by the way. Eat of Me, and rest. Let Me enter into your natural flow of Life, and find that I AM sustenance. You will also need water – clean, fresh, unthreatening pools. I AM taking you there, drink deeply… for I AM also the Water of Life. Verse 3. I AM Restoration. It seems you sheep have a penchant for getting into situations that mar you, outside and inside. I AM that Salve, that Balm of Healing. I AM, also, the right Path. I AM leading you into My ways—not because you are such a good sheep, but simply because I AM. Verse 4. I AM Security. You know, you are going to walk through a couple of deep, dark canyons on the way home. Sheep have perished there. Wolves howl, hyenas yelp, and buzzards circle overhead. The smell of death will be all around you, and it’s too dark there for sheep eyes. But, dear sheep, never mind the danger… I AM there. I AM with you. Listen to My voice—trail close to Me, where I AM correcting your steps, pathway, and direction easily with MY discipline ad restraint. If you feel a stinging correction, it is still My Love for you—for I AM Truth. Verse 5. I AM the total Conqueror. I suppose I should mention to you—down in that valley is the sweetest clover you will ever taste. And while the wolves watch from their dens and the hyenas cower in the shadows, you will feast there. I AM right there to, and to make it special for you—I have a tingling oil for your head. It will be one of the highlights of your sheep-days, you are so happy. And I – I AM chortling at the helplessness of your enemies. Verse 6. I AM your Destination, taking you home. I AM taking you where there is no enemy, only Me and you. All of the goodness, smartness, and glory of Who I AM will flow into you—and you will be with Me forever—not as a sheep, but as a wife…for though I AM your Shepherd, I AM the Lamb of God.
