Psalm 41:1-3 Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers them in times of trouble. The Lord protects and preserves them— they are counted among the blessed in the land— he does not give them over to the desire of their foes. The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness. God is Just, and we are called to stand against injustice. There are many scripture references that echo this truth, like Luke 4:18-19 when Jesus reads from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus reads these words that speak about Him: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Jesus came to proclaim good news to the poor, and Jesus only did what He saw God the Father doing. Lord God, press our hearts, let the lives of others move us to compassion, and grant us the courage to follow You into the breach to defend the poor.
