Psalm 91: Under the Shelter of the Almighty Part 1 Psalm 91 - TopicsExpress

Psalm 91: Under the Shelter of the Almighty Part 1 Psalm 91 begins by speaking of the confidence that people who sincerely trust in the Lord can have - he will be their shade in the heat, their shelter in the storm, their refuge and fortress in the face of enemy attacks (91;1-2). It ends with God´s promises of deliverance, protection, rescue and salvation (91:14-16). In the middle, it gives the assurance that, weak and helpless as we are, we can find our secure home, our dwelling, in the presence of God (91:9). 91:1-8 Protection from Trouble We face many dangers in life. The psalm mentions some that the psalmist faced: fowlers, pestilence, arrows, lions and snakes. A fowler (91:3) was someone who caught birds in snares. Psalms like 124:7 often compare the plots of evildoers against God-fearing people with the snares used by fowlers. Faced with these dangers, people relied on shields (91:4) to protect themselves in the battle and on strong fortresses (91:2) with ramparts (91:4) to protect their homes and families. We too face many dangers, some of which are different from those the psalmist faced. We face danger from diseases such as malaria, cancer and AIDS and from violent people as well as danger in times of civil unrest and everyday danger like traffic accidents. We also face spiritual dangers - attacks by evil powers or evil people and subtle temptations that try to lead us away from God and from a healthy way of life.
