=Public Service Announcement= RE: contaminated frozen berries sold at Costco ***Hepatitis A vaccines available Saturday in Visalia*** Vaccinations will be available Saturday morning in Visalia for people who believe they may have been exposed to the hepatitis A virus after eating contaminated frozen berries. Last week, health warnings were issued in California and other states to not eat Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend, a mix of frozen berries sold by Costco stores. Bags of Berries from the Oregon-based business have been linked to a multi-state outbreak of hepatitis, 33 of them in California. So far, no cases have been reported in Tulare County. But officials with the Tulare County Health and Human Services Agency noted that the Visalia Costco reported having sold some bags of the mixed fruit, though its not clear if any of them contained contaminated fruit. Because the fruit is frozen, people who haven’t heard about the recall could eat the mixed berries fruit weeks after purchasing them, not knowing they’re at risk of hepatitis A exposure. Sine the recall announcement, vaccinations for the virus have been available at the county-run immunization clinic at 1150 S. K St. in Tulare, and at least eight people who have eaten the Townsend Farms fruit received vaccinations there, said Dr. Karen Haught, HHSA’s health director. The one-day vaccinations in north Visalia will be an opportunity for people to receive vaccinations shots without having to go all the way to Tulare, Haught said. Vaccinations will be given from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Visalia Health Care Center, 2611 N. Dinuba Blvd. Haught said a $9 fee will be requested, but not for people on Medi-Cal and Medicaid. *** “But if somebody doesn’t have the money, it can be waived,” Haught said.
