Pulling out my soap box again... I have been going to the Whaling City Festival since I was a kid. Unfortunately, I no longer get excited about going, so I have to say, Im not at all disappointed by the decision to cancel. Before you get all up in arms, here is my reasoning... 1. Remember when they used to sell cool stuff?? They had the army surplus tent, craft tents, toys (not the same at every friggin vendor). 2. Carnival rides are SCARY!!! These people put them up in like a day... It freaks me out seeing people spinning on those rides. I keep expecting to see one launch across the baseball diamond. 3. Entertainment... There isnt any. I know people are into cars. Thanks Joe Jesus... He does 50s night that has a HUGE car show in downtown every year. This might have been remedied by extending the hours, but the committee dragged its feet this year when they decided to petition the chief to extend them. 4. Community involvement is a big thing. Make enough noise and people listen. The surrounding neighborhoods have been pushing back for years and have finally won. I commend the city for offering the trolley from NBHS the past several years to try to alleviate the parking issues, but this is only one of many issues. So many people complain when these things are cancelled or events are changed, but how many people are willing to put in the time and effort to make these events work?? These committees have been fighting to keep the events going and unfortunately, theyve started to become stagnant. Many people say drop the fee so more people will rent space, but they NEED to make money to keep it going. There is only so much they can do.
