‘Put Kidex highway plan on hold’ THE state government has been urged to hold all approvals for the proposed Kinrara-Damansara Expressway (Kidex) highway until the concessionaire’s contract is made public, the House heard yesterday. Ng Sze Han (DAP-Kinrara) said the state had to obtain the contract, the Traffic Impact Assessment, Social Impact Assessment, Road Safety Impact, and the Environmental Impact Assessment before approving the highway project. “The state should conduct a comprehensive study to check if public transportation was a better alternative to the Kidex highway,” he added. Ng said a more conducive masterplan should be drawn up, taking into consideration Malaysia’s high dependency on private vehicles as a result of a poor public transportation system. On the other hand, he said Puchong residents were open to the idea of building a new highway but they also worry about increased toll charges. “The highway will definitely benefit residents who often suffer the horrific traffic congestion in Puchong, provided that the tolls do not burden them,” he added. Ng applauded Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s move to reject a highway concessionaire’s request for an increase in toll rates. He also hoped that the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) would retain its shares in Kesas highway and use the profits to not charge toll on weekends. --starproperty
