Ministry sources said it would be a first of its kind of initiatives to be undertaken at the national level. But looking at prevalence of undernourishment in the country, things are not going to be easy for implementation of the scheme. According to World Health Organization (WHO), close to 1.3 million children die every year in India due to malnutrition and nearly 46 per cent of all children below the age of three are too small for their age, 47 per cent are underweight and at least 16 per cent are wasted. Many of these children are severely malnourished. The prevalence of malnutrition varies across states, with Madhya Pradesh recording the highest rate (55 per cent) and Kerala among the lowest (27 per cent). Addressing inaugural session of a workshop of the Mission, Union Minister for Women & Child Development Maneka Gandhi said a comprehensive time-bound action plan in the form of the ‘National Nutrition Mission’ needed to be put in place urgently to accelerate progress towards nutrition security in India. She asked various stakeholders to put such an action plan in place by November 1 this year. The ongoing workshop is expected to discuss a wide array of topics related to nutrition including understanding the biology of under nutrition, nutrition indicators, convergent actions for nutrition and success stories from states among others. The final outcome of the workshop will be an action plan to help the ministry formulate the details of the national nutrition mission.
