Putin’s Perfect Storm. While the Obama Administration is - TopicsExpress

Putin’s Perfect Storm. While the Obama Administration is spinning its wheels on what to do about ISIS, Putin moves on the Ukraine. Syria has been a client state of Russia—in varying degrees—for decades. And as Syria teeters amid internal fighting (Assad’s forces, opposition rebels, and now ISIS) I wonder if Putin thinks why not let its former client pass into history if it can regain control of the eastern Ukraine. They got away with unbridled aggression to seize control of the Crimea. Why not once again? Maybe Putin has come to the realization that it may be better to let Syria go—and occupy US attention there with ISIS—than to let pass the opportunity to take advantage of a weak western response to aggression in the Ukraine. I may be dead wrong on this scenario, but one thing is true: weakness in the face of aggression breeds more aggression. That’s what has happened here. nytimes/2014/08/29/world/europe/ukraine-conflict.html
