Puzzling e-mail. To sum up: .... while I love your commentary on video games & how the media mistreats them I am unfollowing you because the Frankenfood show appearance is not video games... Really? Thing is... this isnt the only thing I heard along these lines over the past 24 hours, either... though it is the only open unfriending because of it. So I showed up briefly on a cable network television show that had nothing to do with video gaming? So what? A huge, huge part of what I do is to fight the fight that says video gaming culture and history should be a peer to film, television, music and professional sports. I feel video gaming should be just as much a part of shows like the Tonight Show, Today Show and SNL as those other forms of entertainment, and respected just like those other forms of entertainment on news and variety programming. This should be clear. Video Gaming IS Pop Culture, remember? This misconception that video games are or should be on an island by themselves with some big iron wall up all around it is foolish, outdated and frankly harmful to the long-term growth of video gaming. I feel that gatekeeping (as an audience member in my SXSW panel called it) is why video games are not already as respected as those other forms of entertainment despite grossing far more money than the lot of them. So I find this persons logic to be... well, illogical. They say they like the stuff I say about video games and how the mainstream should treat them, yet Im somehow made unclean or something because I showed up for a few minutes on a cooking competition show on cable television? If anything, someone connected to video gaming showing up outside of something that is traditional video game media should be seen as a good thing, IMO... regardless of if its me or anyone else. How are we gonna bust that old narrative if we are only talking among ourselves? To this person... if you are still reading (which, I find, is usually true... seems those who unfriend or even block me are actually my most loyal audience)... get used to it. This is not the only outside of gaming visit Ill be making in entertainment media over the next few months / year. But it doesnt make me any less gaming for it. If anything, I can and am using it as a vehicle to get people to see the video game stuff on a larger scale... ... just like I have said is my long-term plan for, oh, 5 years now? Six? Just when I thought Id heard it all.
